COOPERATIVE LEARNING AND CONSTRUCTIVIST .
Cooperative learning.
1.
What is Cooperative learning ?
According to Slavin (1988) cooperative learning
covers learning methods in which students work in small groups ( generally 4-6
students) and group success is awarded in different ways. Both group rewards
and individual accountability are necessary for cooperative methods to be most
effective. Group rewards with individual accountability means that each
individual is rewarded only when others in his or her group also succeed, which
prevents high achievers from dominating the work.
1. 2. Why use cooperative Learning ?
a)
SHARING A COMMON GOAL: First and foremost, students who work together as a team
share a common goal.
b)
LEADERSHIP GOALS : In order for a group to truly succeed,
individuals within the group need to show leadership abilities. Skills such as
dividing out the tasks involved, providing support, and ensuring that
individuals are meeting their goals are all leadership skills.
c)
COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Effective teamwork is all
about good communication and a commitment to the product or activity.
a)
DECISION MAKING SKILLS: Many decisions will need attention while working in a cooperative
environment.
What is
Constructivism?
Constructivism is the idea
that learning is the result of assimilation and accommodation. Constructivist
theory says that learning happens in two ways-- through assimilation, which is
when we connect new knowledge to our prior knowledge, and through
accommodation, which is when we actually adjust our view of the world in order
to accommodate new knowledge that has been presented to us.
Role of
teachers: the teacher's main focus should
be on guiding students by asking questions that will lead them to develop their
own conclusions on the subject.

I really enjoyed reading your reflection. You have started your reflection with a definition on cooperative learning and then you have listed some of the reasons why we as teachers to be should use cooperative learning. You have not forgotten to include what constructivism is and then with just a single sentence you have emphasized the major role of the teacher in promoting constructivism, which is asking good questions.
